-- lifestyle newborn information

you're having a baby!

this is such a precious time in your lives!

i want to tell what it is that i love about capturing this special time so that you are fully aware and can know what to expect from me and our session. i love the details, the soft and squishy, the wisps of hair, the tiny toes, and their sleepy smiles. i love photographing these details. i also love photographing the connection and love that you share with this new family member. the way that baby cuddles in your arms and the prideful smile she puts on your face, a peaceful snooze on the couch or bed. the way baby brother or sister holds him or the gentle way your dog licks his feet. all of these encounters are what this time is all about. if you prefer this to the traditional/posed newborn photography then i'm so glad you stopped by and i can't wait to hear from you!

  • newborn sessions are typically 2-4 hours long.
  • because of the duration, quantity of images, and pre-planning done by me, the price for newborn session is higher.
  • ideal time is 7-10 days old. this doesn't always happen, so no worries! we can still create beautiful images after this time frame.
  • sessions take place in the client's home (preferably master bedroom, living room, and nursery) we can also go outside for some, if weather permits!

please don't feel stressed about making sure everything is "perfect" you just had a baby! i also don't want you to feel like you're having a guest over and you need to clean or tidy your home, i absolutely do not expect this, again, you just had a baby! i may move things around a bit to un-clutter the background of some photos or reposition a chair so the lighting is right, but i promise i'll put it all back the way it was! :) the only thing you may want to consider, is having your bed made with a neutral quilt/comforter on top. your bed makes a great place for cuddly family photos!

if your baby is not "cooperating" in the way you imagined, that's ok! maybe we take a break, try changing him/her, feeding, etc. we are on their schedule, which is the main reason these sessions are longer than typical family sessions.

i believe less is more with newborns, so i suggest photographing them in a swaddle blanket or with just a diaper. feel free to include any special family quilts, heirlooms, or blankets! blankets make for perfect additions to make your session your own. if you want to incorporate bows or flowers, i think the smaller/skinnier bands work better for newborns.

neutral wardrobes (creams, white, pastel, gray tones) are ideal for all, but particularly the adults/siblings, so as not to draw attention away from your little angel :) if you want to add pops of color, use jewelry or accessories. solid tops (and textures like big knits and lace) work best. stay away from prominent logos or writing on clothing.

about an hour before our session, i recommend making your house a little warmer than usual (75 degrees is good, you can go higher so long as you're not too uncomfortable). this will help your baby be more comfortable, especially with outfit changes and for some of the bare shots.
